  • Journey lasted 1-3 months
  • Regulations said that the ships could transport 350 people, but most transported 800-1000
  • Passengers stripped naked, branded, whipped, starved, and crammed into the crawlspaces of the ship
  • Death by scurvy, smallpox, and dysentery were very common
  • About 1/2 of the departing passengers would make it to the Americas
  • Passengers chained together and crammed into spaces less than 5 feet high
